Helping children, youth and families in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan
Genacross Family & Youth Services believes the outcomes that matter most are transformed lives changed for the better. We provide residential and community-based treatment, parental support, alternate learning environments, behavioral health, and day treatment services to children, youth and families throughout northwest Ohio and the surrounding region.
Creating behavioral changes in children and youth that enable them to function productively and appropriately within their respective communities is our ultimate goal. To affect positive change, we offer a full continuum of care with a seamless delivery system.
We accept children and youth into the most appropriate setting based on their specific needs. With personal growth and healing, the care setting can change and become less restrictive. We are able to ensure that every person we care for receives the personal attention he or she needs with low staff-to-client ratios, including 1:1 or 2:1 if necessary. Furthermore, we adhere to a no-eject policy for our youth that builds trust, fosters continuity in their lives, and facilitates change.
Family & Youth Services is a member of the Ohio Children’s Alliance and the Michigan Federation for Children and Families. These memberships keep us abreast of the newest and most up-to-date information in our field.
All our residential treatment and clinical programs are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), now known as CARF International. The residential and group home settings are licensed by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) and/or the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). The clinical program is certified by the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (OMHAS).

Genacross Family & Youth Services works with children and youth, ages 6-21, who have had multiple failed placements. Most times they arrive at Genacross from hospitalization, detention or administrative discharge from institutional settings. Children and youth usually have significant emotional and behavioral needs that have interfered with past placement success. Our programs offer a highly structured daily routine, including teaching social skills, coping skills and independent living skills. Community involvement is also part of the daily structure.
Residential treatment for children and youth is provided at the Maumee Youth Center — a children’s residential center on 13 acres of wooded land in rural Henry County. The Center serves up to 27 children and youth in three distinct units. The different unit options allow for flexibility in meeting the varying needs of our most at-risk clients.
Genacross also operates several youth group homes in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan. Our community-based homes serve youth with multiple needs requiring daily structure, routine and treatment services. The staff-to-client ratio of 1:2, or 1:1 if necessary, allows us to work with high-risk youth in an open setting. Programming is designed to help clients strengthen and develop skills necessary to improve their overall daily functioning.
Genacross Family & Youth Services offers two alternative learning environments for students with severe emotional and behavioral needs. These programs are a partnership between Genacross Lutheran Services and both Oregon City Schools and Liberty Center Schools. We serve students living in our group home settings, as well as local youth living in the community.
Our school programs have the ability to customize services to meet each student’s individual needs, according to his or her individual education plan. We have highly trained and skilled staff and teachers who have educational experience teaching the Ohio Learning Standards and can also provide a balance of behavioral interventions.
Genacross Family & Youth Services provides outpatient mental health services to children, youth, families, and adults through individual and group counseling, diagnostic assessments, pharmacological management, and mental health education.
We provide intense clinical services to all residents living in our residential and group homes, as well as individuals in the community. Clients receive an assessment and are assigned individual therapists based on need. Therapists see clients one or two times weekly, or more often as needed.
Clients may also receive medication education from our on-site registered nurses. Additionally, they may receive pharmacological management from a contracted psychiatrist on a monthly basis.
Genacross Family & Youth Services offers day treatment services to clients attending one of its educational settings or summer programs. Services are available Monday through Friday and provide intense, structured, goal-oriented treatment that addresses the individualized needs of our clients.
Treatment includes therapy groups, individual counseling and psychoeducational groups on a daily basis. Topics addressed include teamwork, self-esteem, social skills, communication, emotions management, coping skills, self-discovery, problem solving and character development.
Genacross Family & Youth Services facilitates a Partners in Treatment Program one weekend every month to focus on family relationships. Families participate in this program if their goal is to preserve their relationship or reunify the youth into the family home.
The weekend program gives families extended time together, with staff support as appropriate, to encourage healthy interactions and positive rapport-building. Throughout the program, the youth and their families receive individual and group therapy focused on identifying barriers to reunification and developing improved communication and coping skills to strengthen their relationships.
The youth and their families have an opportunity to work together using creative activities, discussions and other therapeutic exercises to open up, learn more about each other, and build and strengthen skills to make preservation or reunification a reality.
